From the 1960s onwards Nicola L. (born Nicola Leuthe) blended fine arts, performance and design, with an enduring sense of humour and a constant desire for creating collective experiences. She explored the body relentlessly throughout her career, from anthropomorphic furniture in the spirit of pop art to installations inviting bodies and artwork to form a new, organic and communal entity. For her series of what she called 'pénétrables', she used the structural elements of traditional painting, a stretched canvas, but stitched pockets onto them for head, arms and legs, creating a work that could be worn as a garment or brought to life with the human body. When not inhabited, these paintings became hanging objects with a ghostly presence, hinting at a potential playful activation.
In 1976 Nicola L. was invited for a solo exhibition at M HKA’s predecessor organisation, the ICC (International Cultural Centre), in Antwerp. Banners, masks, drawings and installations were on display, as well as a large coat for eleven people which she took into the street. The action with the coat was repeated in various cities under the title Same Skin For Everybody and was first performed at the Isle of Wight Music Festival in 1970. Nicola L. always had a broad cultural interest, ranging from functional art (as she called it), to film and music. When she moved to New York in 1979 and settled in the Chelsea Hotel, she devoted herself to film, making works that included a short documentary about the punk rock band Bad Brains at the legendary club CBGB. Vanaf de jaren 1960 mengde Nicola L. (geboren als Nicola Leuthe) beeldende kunst, performance en design, met een aanhoudend gevoel voor humor en een constant verlangen naar het creëren van collectieve ervaringen. Gedurende haar hele carrière verkende ze onophoudelijk het lichaam, van antropomorfe meubels in de geest van pop-art tot installaties die lichamen en kunstwerken uitnodigen om een nieuwe, organische en gemeenschappelijke entiteit te vormen. Voor haar serie die ze 'pénétrables' noemde, gebruikte ze de structurele elementen van traditioneel schilderen, een opgespannen doek, maar naaide ze er zakken op het voorhoofd, armen en benen, waardoor een werk ontstond dat als kledingstuk kon worden gedragen of tot leven kon worden gewekt met het menselijk lichaam. Wanneer ze niet bewoond waren, werden deze schilderijen hangende objecten met een spookachtige aanwezigheid die wachten op een mogelijke speelse activering.
In 1976 werd Nicola L. uitgenodigd voor een solotentoonstelling in de voorganger van het M HKA, het ICC (Internationaal Cultureel Centrum) in Antwerpen. Er waren spandoeken, maskers, tekeningen en installaties te zien, maar ook een grote jas voor elf personen waarmee ze de straat op ging. De actie met de jas werd in verschillende steden herhaald onder de titel Same Skin For Everybody en werd voor het eerst uitgevoerd op het Isle of Wight Music Festival in 1970. Nicola L. had altijd een brede culturele belangstelling, variërend van functionele kunst (zoals ze het noemde) tot film en muziek. Toen ze in 1979 naar New York verhuisde en zich in het Chelsea Hotel vestigde, legde ze zich toe op film. (née Nicola Leuthe) mêle les beaux-arts, la performance et le design, avec un sens de l'humour indéfectible et un désir constant de créer des expériences collectives. Elle a exploré le corps sans relâche tout au long de sa carrière, du mobilier anthropomorphe dans l'esprit du pop art aux installations invitant les corps et les œuvres d'art à former une nouvelle entité, organique et communautaire. Pour sa série de « pénétrables », elle a utilisé les éléments structurels de la peinture traditionnelle, une toile tendue, mais y a cousu des poches pour la tête, les bras et les jambes, créant ainsi une œuvre qui pourrait être portée comme un vêtement ou prendre vie avec le corps humain. Lorsqu'elles ne sont pas habitées, ces peintures deviennent des objets suspendus avec une présence fantomatique, laissant entrevoir une activation ludique potentielle.
En 1976, Nicola L. a été invitée à participer à une exposition individuelle à l'ICC (International Cultural Centre), l'organisation qui a précédé le M HKA, à Anvers. Des bannières, des masques, des dessins et des installations sont exposés, ainsi qu'un grand manteau pour onze personnes qu'elle porte dans la rue. L'action avec le manteau a été répétée dans plusieurs villes sous le titre Same Skin For Everybody et a été présentée pour la première fois au festival de musique de l'île de Wight en 1970. Nicola L. a toujours eu un large intérêt culturel, allant de l'art fonctionnel (comme elle l'appelait) au cinéma et à la musique. Lorsqu'elle a déménagé à New York en 1979 et s'est installée à l'hôtel Chelsea, elle s'est consacrée au cinéma, réalisant des œuvres telles qu'un court documentaire sur le groupe de punk rock Bad Brains au légendaire club CBGB.
